This quote means that doing what's right will get you more freedom then choosing the wrong. When you do more good things and being honest you'll have more opportunities than a person who isn't being honest. Being independence will get you to places. Its better to have independence and freedom than not having it. It will make your life more easier than before. My teacher was talking about a university that has these kind of codes like always being honest, never do drugs, and etc. That these codes will get you in life and make it way easier. Brigham Young was saying that to have independence and freedom is better than not having it.
